Part-time courses explained

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) defines a part-time student as any student who attends for less than 21 hours a week for less than 24 weeks a year, except for students studying on a sandwich course. Some definitions refer to part-time students studying for less than 16 hours per week. Check with each university or college that you want to apply to for their particular definition.

The length of the course will vary according to the hours per week and the overall structure of the course, but could be from 1 year up to 10 years. The material used on a course is often the same as on a full-time course.

Universities and colleges are very aware that flexible learning is important to part-time students and that the course structure and study times must fit around other commitments. With this in mind, courses may be offered in a variety of ways and at a variety of times, such as:

  • evenings
  • daytime
  • a mix of day and evening study
  • weekends
  • distance learning
  • start at any point in the year
  • on a modular basis.
