30 August 2006
Latest UCAS figures show that 344,964 representing 70.8% of the total applicants have had their places successfully confirmed at university or college in comparison with 358,315 (71.2%) at the same point last year and 331,027 (71.0%) in 2004.
These statistics mark a 3.7% decrease in the number of accepted applicants on 2005 but a 4.2% increase on 2004. The overall trend over the three year period continues to be an upward one when accounting for the spike in applications received in 2005.
The proportion of applicants whose initial outcome is known at this point stands at 94.0%. On the same day of Clearing in 2005 this figure was 94.1% and in 2004 93.9%. The proportion of these applicants who have an unconditional firm offer, excluding those accepted through Clearing, is 71.7%. This compares with 72.4% in 2005 and 2004.
The proportion of applicants accepted through Clearing so far this year is 3.3% or 16,289 acceptances. At this point in 2005, 15,503 applicants had been accepted through Clearing or 3.1%.
At present 104,933 applicants are eligible for Clearing, compared to 110,042 in 2005 and 100,045 in 2004. Previous experience suggests that perhaps 50% of these applicants are active in Clearing. There are approximately 35,000 courses with vacancies in Clearing.
Acceptances to degree courses are down 3.7% on 2005 from 340,865 to 328,278. However, comparing 2006 to 2004 shows a 4.4% increase from 314,574. Foundation degrees continue to show an increase in acceptances, up 17.2% to 10,395.
Acceptances from other EU countries (excluding the UK and Ireland) are up by 10.0% from 12,147 to 13,357 and from countries outside of the EU by 0.2% from 23,141 to 23,189. China continues to be the country with the most accepted applicants at 3,315, down 4.3% from 3,464. The number of accepted applicants from Hong Kong shows an increase of 14.3% from 1,845 to 2,108 and the United States an increase of 21.1% from 877 to 1,062.
Acceptances of Welsh students by Welsh institutions are up by 7.5% from 9,013 to 9,687. Acceptances of applicants living in England by Scottish institutions are down by 14.7% from 4,194 to 3,577 and acceptances of Scottish students by English institutions are down 7.4% from 1,719 to 1,519.

Notes
Includes those deferring entry to the following year. (Applicants are counted in the year in which they apply, not the year in which they intend to begin their course.)
Eligible applicants are sent details of Clearing, but as they do not have to register with UCAS to take part, the number active is not known.
Includes those withdrawn after accepting an offer.
Comparisons with previous years are made relative to the publication of Advanced level results ( 17 August 2006, 18 August 2005 and 19 August 2004). For example, figures for Thursday, 31 August 2006, fourteen days after this year's publication date, will be compared with those for Thursday 01 September 2005 and Thursday, 02 September 2004.
