Notes:

1. The applications digest lists the number of applications (main scheme choices) made by applicants in the 2008 and 2007 UCAS entry cycles to individual universities and colleges recruiting students through UCAS for higher education courses.

2. The data shown are counts of the choices made in the UCAS main scheme to courses together with the associated percentage changes based upon the same point in last year's cycle.

Separate counts for "Degree" (which includes Foundation Year courses), Foundation Degree (FDG) and "Other" - (which includes choices to Higher National Diploma, Higher National Certificate, Certificates of H.E., Diplomas of H.E. courses, including those in social work, midwifery and nursing, and some postgraduate courses in social work) are provided.

Cells are shown as "-" if an institution does not offer "Degree", "FDG" or "Other" courses or did not receive any choices to such course types.

Comparisons are not possible for institutions that joined UCAS for 2008 entry.

Numbers attaching to institutions that have totally withdrawn from UCAS membership this year are not included.

3. The figures for 2008 are for choices (from both UK and overseas domiciled applicants) made during the current cycle (since September 2007) up to the 30 June closing date, choices made during this period on a deferred basis (for entry in 2009) are counted. Choices made by applicants in earlier entry cycles on a deferred entry basis are not counted in the 2008 numbers.

The figures for 2007 are for choices (from both UK and overseas domiciled applicants) made during the previous years cycle (September 2006 up to the 30 June 2007 closing date), choices made during this period on a deferred basis (for entry in 2008) are counted. Choices made by applicants in earlier entry cycles on a deferred entry basis are not counted in the 2007 numbers.

Counts of choices made in 2007 do not include any choices made in the NMAS admission scheme.

4. The Key to the column "Changed" in the table is as follows:

"A" :- Additional Institutions for 2008 (new UCAS member institutions)

"E" :- Expanded Institutions for 2008 (relates to the consolidation of two or more UCAS institution codes into a single code, normally as a result of merger or the institution concerned now recruiting on behalf of an institution that has left the membership of UCAS).

"R" :- Renamed and recoded for 2008 (UCAS institution code changed for 2008 cycle as a result of a change in the institutional name or title. Note: those changes in name or title which have not resulted in a change of institutional code are shown as "N" or "No Change").

"N" :- No change in the UCAS institution code.

5. For "Expanded Institutions" the 2007 data have been combined so that the nearest like for like comparison can be made:-

2007 data for University of Cumbria (C99) includes that for Cumbria Institute of the Arts (previously C95) and St Martin's College (previously S24).

2007 data for University of Greenwich (G70) includes that for European School of Osteopathy (previously E80).

2007 data includes that for University Campus Suffolk (S82) includes that for Great Yarmouth College (previously G64).

2007 data includes that for Birmingham City University (formerly University of Central England in Birmingham - C25) includes that for South Birmingham College (previously S29) and Sutton Coldfield College (previously S91).

2007 data includes that for University of Hertfordshire (H36) includes that for Hertford Regional College (previously H37).

2007 data includes that for University of the West of Scotland (formerly the University of Paisley P20) includes that for Bell College (previously B26).

2007 data includes that for University of Glamorgan (G14) includes that for Glamorgan Centre for Art and Design (previously G20).

6. The type ("Degree", "FDG" or "Other") is based on the current course choice, which may differ from the course choice to which the applicant originally applied e.g. if the latter was invalid, or if a change of course offer has been made. All route B applications are included, whether referred to institutions or not.

7. The data refers to applications (choices), NOT applicants. The total number of applicants who had applied by 30 June 2008 was 540,108, compared to 494,842 at 30 June 2007.

8. From 2008 cycle the number of main scheme choices available to applicants is reduced from six (in 2007) to five. The maximum number of choices available to courses in Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science/medicine remains at four.

9. For 2008 the average number of main scheme choices made by applicants as at the 30 June closing date was 4.07 this compared with an average of 4.78 at the same point last year (see point 7 above)

10. For 2008 the admissions service for nursing and midwifery diploma courses, NMAS, has been incorporated into the main UCAS scheme. NMAS closed in 2007 in order to streamline applications to nursing and midwifery courses and offer students better information and more choice.

11. It should be noted that not all institutions are included within the Applications Digest.

12. The number of choices made to an institution can sometimes change significantly from one year to the next due to the addition, withdrawal or merger of courses, changes in entry requirements or other local factors not recorded by UCAS.
