Qualification reform timeline

Our qualification reform timeline gives details of subjects and qualifications which will be offered in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Qualifications in the UK are currently undergoing significant reform, for example:

  • reforms to GCSEs and A levels will result in structurally different qualifications with the same name in different parts of the UK
  • the flexibility offered by the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland and the de-coupling of the AS from the A level in England means that secondary schools and colleges are likely to offer increasingly diverse programmes
  • reforms to vocational qualifications in England, driven by school performance tables
  • the introduction of fully reformed regional Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate
