Applying for university can be one of, if not, the most stressful thing you may have experienced up until that point in your education life. After submitting your UCAS application, the waiting game is very anxious, but you’re not alone. There’s thousands of other students around the country all experiencing the same feelings and anxieties. After applying, there’s not much you can do besides wait for a response. If you’ve used all five choices and been unsuccessful with all of them, or you’ve had a change of heart about the unis you’ve applied to, you don’t need to wait for Clearing. You can apply though UCAS Extra!

But what is UCAS Extra? This blog post will answer all your questions about what it is, who it’s for and whether it’s the right choice for you!

Extra begins in late February and is an opportunity for you to apply for another course if you’ve used all five choices and don’t hold any offers. You can add one choice at a time. As an NQT, my first full year of teaching seems to have flown by. It's been a busy year, and I still find myself thinking “Wow, I'm actually a teacher now!” I trained through a School Direct route which put me right in the centre of school life from day one. I had training in Reception, Year 3 and Year 6, and I am now the very proud teacher of a Year 2 class. In light of my training period coming to a close, here are some tips that I have put together to inspire anyone who is about to take the leap into the best profession in the whole world.

1. Be prepared
In the world of teaching, organisation is key. I would recommend buying a USB with a large memory, and also splashing out on a portable hard drive. This allows you to back up everything. Starting to look for a university as well as a course can seem like a very daunting task to begin with however I am going to offer you some advice to help you on your way to finding the course of your dreams!
 
1.    To begin with, I suggest thinking about what interests you – business, maths, science, law? Having a broad subject area is fine to begin with! Once you’ve done this you can start thinking about which areas of these subjects you enjoy the most: for example in business it could be marketing, accounting or human resources. Starting your UCAS application is the easy part but finishing it is 64,972 times more difficult so I’m here to provide you with some helpful advice on how to nail that application before the deadline dates.
 
Sit down and get to it
 
It sounds stupid but just setting time aside, sitting down and cracking on with your application is probably the best way to get it finished. Once you start you’ll realise there isn’t nearly as much to do as you may think in fact, the hardest part is completing your personal statement and once that bit is done everything else seems to come so much easier. My top tip would be fill out all the sections before the personal statement section in one or two sittings, then it’ll all be done apart from that bit section.

So, it’s that time of year again, when UCAS deadlines are looming. But there’s no need to panic. Hopefully you’ve completed the majority of your application by this point, so all that’s left is a few tweaks. Here are my top tips to make your application the best it can be:
 
1.     Double check your information
Inputting your details, like your GCSE grades and address, was probably one of the first things that you did as part of completing the UCAS application. However, you may not have checked it since. Just take a couple of minutes to check that these little details are right; the last thing you want is a university querying your grades or sending information to the wrong address!
