True crime stories continue to be popular around the world. From magazines to movies, museums to podcasts, (auto)biographies to documentaries - crime stories are a sought-after commodity. Yet these stories often draw on highly problematic tropes and motifs, making their proliferation a worrying trend for critical criminologists. It is our job to interrogate which stories are really being told. In this taster we’ll start to explore the impact of these stories on public opinion and social (in)justice, and to ask what ethical questions arise when we represent the most private details of a person’s life and in many cases their death.
