Course summary

Combine practical with theoretical in this hands-on Biomedical Engineering course. The medical devices sector is fast-growing, and as medical science advances, biomedical engineers are even more in demand.

Put your lab skills to use on hospital visits. Get hands-on with medical tech. Test biomaterials and medical devices, and learn practical skills like dissection to cement your knowledge of human anatomy and surgical conundrums.

Like all our Engineering courses, Biomedical Engineering shares a common first year. So you can choose to switch to a different pathway in your second year if you want to.

The Foundation Year is an extra year of study at the start of your degree. It’s designed to boost your academic skills and knowledge of your specialist area. When you successfully complete it, you can transfer seamlessly into the full degree programme.

Assessment method

You'll be assessed through a combination of written, practical and coursework assessments throughout your degree. Written assessment typically includes exams and multiple choice tests. Practical is an assessment of your skills and competencies. This could include presentations, school experience, work experience or laboratory work. Coursework typically includes essays, written assignments, dissertations, research projects or producing a portfolio of your work.

UCAS Tariff - 80 points

Access to HE Diploma

Pass Access to HE Diploma overall with a minimum 80 UCAS tariff points

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 24 points

GCSE Maths at grade 6/B. Equivalent qualifications are not accepted.

The foundation year is designed for applicants whose qualifications and experience do not allow direct entry to the undergraduate degree. We expect applicants to demonstrate an experience of a related subject and an aptitude for academic work which may be determined by an essay and/or interview alongside the application.

For applicants with Level 3 qualifications, we will usually require a minimum of 80 points.
