Undergraduate Open Day 2026 (Sat 26 Sep)

Become a highly skilled cybersecurity expert who can find and fix security vulnerabilities on this hands-on degree. Right from the very start, you’ll be analysing, designing and implementing secure software systems.
Using your grasp of programming and computer architecture, you'll create secure systems with fewer vulnerabilities, covering both offensive and defensive techniques. This course delivers lots of practical experience, working across desktop, mobile and embedded platforms.
Develop measures to stop cyberattacks
The UK's national cybersecurity strategy identifies software vulnerabilities as a key threat and makes building security into software from the start a national priority. But most software developers aren't cybersecurity experts – and that's what the industry needs right now.
Your specialist developer expertise will make you hugely employable. You'll be prepared for the rapidly evolving cybersecurity work environment, using your expertise in ethical hacking, computing, secure software engineering and human-centred security.
Cybersecurity experts are highly sought after
The worldwide shortage of cybersecurity specialists means that our graduates usually find jobs easily, with many headhunted before they even graduate.
This course ranked UK top 5 for Course Satisfaction (Computer Science and Information Systems) in the 2022 Guardian University Guide. And the 2024 Complete University Guide named us the top Scottish modern university for Computer Science.
Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education
Abertay University was one of the first eight UK universities to be awarded Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education, and the first in Scotland to gain Gold. This is recognition by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) – part of GCHQ.
You’ll learn through a blend of lectures, tutorials, practical work and reading.
The majority of modules make use of online learning resources. Real-world case studies of major attacks and data breaches are used provide the opportunity for critical analysis and evaluation in class.
During practical exercises, you’ll be expected to evaluate your own work to make sure that products are functional and fit for purpose.
Knowledge and skill are assessed through project work, reports, portfolios and practical assessments. Approximately 20% of the degree is assessed by examination.
