At Level 4, you will learn fundamental skills across various applied art and design areas. This level allows you to experiment, learn, and have fun trying new things.
At Level 5, you will specialise in an area of your interest based on the insights you gained about yourself and your talents during Level 4. You will conduct research to understand how to break into your chosen market. This degree offers the freedom to create work that will help you enter the industry, allowing you to develop briefs that address your own identified needs. You will have opportunities to collaborate with industry professionals on external briefs, building a strong portfolio of relevant work. Throughout this process, experienced staff will support you in further developing your skills.
Finally, Level 6 is focused on you and your chosen career. You will begin by researching and creating an academic piece that showcases your knowledge, which informs your Final Major Project. You will spend your entire last year creating an outstanding piece of work to professional standards. This project will serve as your launchpad into your desired design industry, whether it be in applied art, 2D, 3D, or moving image. The staff will help you identify your real strengths and guide you on how to pursue them effectively.

100% practical assessments over three years – no exams. Assessment is primarily by projects; students create a solution to a design and/or applied art brief and document the process in a journal or portfolio. There is the opportunity to practice presentation skills, talking with clients and peers to improve communication skills. There are also two modules where the students will write an essay with full academic support; the essay subject matter is chosen by the student and is an opportunity to become knowledgeable about an area of art and design that they are interested in. In Level 6, the students have a choice of how they present the results of their research into their chosen subject and their critical discussion of this research: they may choose to write an extended essay, create a video essay or articles for an academic journal.

The following entry points are available for this course:
Standard offer
Applicants will require 80 UCAS points in an art and/or design-related subject, or 60 Access-to-HE Credits (of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3). Applicants are required to hold English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent) at Grade C/4.
A portfolio/body of work will be required to evidence an informed interest in and appreciation of the subject area.
Non-standard offer
Non-standard entry is intended to support students who may not meet the standard academic entry requirements of a HE programme, normally level 3 qualifications which attract UCAS points (for instance A-levels or BTEC level 3 courses). An applicant must be able to demonstrate recent work/experience in the relevant sector, which would give them skills and knowledge comparable to applicants with Level 3 qualifications.
All non-traditional applicants will be assessed through an interview assessing their overall interest in the subject matter as well as their current academic skills. They will be set an appropriate piece of work designed to judge their creative and academic skills. A judgement is then made considering their academic potential and relevant experience, and skills. For example, a person may not have a background in design, but has creative flair, excellent problem-solving and teamwork abilities and the desire to change careers through training.
