Course summary

Prepare for your professional career with a work placement year, whilst building a foundation of knowledge in psychology. Our four-year BPS-accredited Psychology with Placement Year BSc enables you to take a scientific approach to understanding why people behave the way they do and apply your learnings through a work placement, developing industry insights and practical experience in the real-world. The skills you will develop on this degree will not only equip you with subject-specific knowledge but will also provide you with a variety of transferable skills that can be used across a wide range of sectors.

Why choose this course?

  • This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS)

  • Spend a year gaining practical experience in industry

  • Gain highly transferable graduate employability skills to pursue a broad range of careers in business, service, education and caring professions

  • Personalise your studies with a variety of optional modules which explore contemporary topics and debates

Study psychology for a deep understanding of the mind and behaviour. From biological influences and social pressures to environmental factors that affect how people think, act, and feel - psychology underpins all that we are and everything we do.

On this BPS-accredited programme*, you will follow the Single Honours Psychology structure, and take a year out to work within an applied setting between your second year and final year. This might be working with a charity, working with people with mental health difficulties or disabilities, or acting as a research assistant in a university department.

Doing a placement year enables you to use the psychological knowledge and skills acquired from the course in a practical setting relevant to developing a professional psychology career. Whether you choose to source your own placement or take advantage of our links with local organisations, we'll support you throughout the process to find a placement to suit your future aspirations.

As an emerging researcher, you will gain experience with data analysis, report writing and practical sessions that enable you to apply your learning and draw upon psychological theories explored as part of your programme of study. You will have access to a range of facilities and equipment, including virtual reality headsets, brain stimulation devices, and our state-of-the-art Central Science Laboratories. As you progress through your degree you will be able to further explore areas of personal interests, enabling you to dig deeper and tailor your degree to your career interests through module selection.

At Keele, you will advance your professional skills as a researcher and psychologist in the making. Whether you would like to pursue a career in industry or related fields, our programme equips you with core skills in communication, problem-solving and analytical thinking to help prepare you for employment. You'll learn from real-world research projects, use industry-standard equipment and gain practical experience.

*subject to passing your final year project and achieving a minimum 2:2 degree award
