Spending power of students resilient and robust despite Covid chaos
Closed sixth forms, cancelled exams, reassessed grades, and many were furloughed from their part time jobs. Autumn 2020’s freshers had a tough run up to their first year at university, but despite the chaos of Covid, the spending power of students has remained resilient, according to the first part of the 2021 Student Lifestyle Report, published today by UCAS Media.
Students turn to technology with university choices
New subject data from UCAS shows a big shift towards technology-based degrees mirroring recent trends, with the last decade seeing impressive growth in engineering and computer science subjects, including a 400% jump in acceptances to artificial intelligence (AI) courses.
Students from disadvantaged backgrounds more likely than ever to be accepted into university on results day
Students are receiving their qualification results this morning and signing in to UCAS Track. Record numbers of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds have a confirmed place on an undergraduate course, more applicants have been accepted onto their first choice of course than last year, and overall, more applicants have a place compared to results day 2019.
University applications rise during lockdown
A total of 514,020 people of all ages from across the UK have now applied through UCAS this year for a place on an undergraduate course – up 1.6% on this point in 2019, and reversing a fall in UK applicants from earlier this year.
