Student life

Tameside stretches eastward from Manchester to the Peak District National Park.  Its landscape encompasses urban centres, moorland and the spectacular vistas of Werneth Low.  The borough was created in 1974 and includes 9 districts.  Taking its name from the River Tame, Tameside was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and was once a centre for engineering, cotton and coal mining.  Top attractions within Tameside include Portland Basin Museum, Werneth Low Country Park, Park Bridge Heritage Centre and Ashton Market.

Only 25 minutes away in the car or on the tram is Manchester City Centre, which has been voted the UK’s best city to live in*, not surprising with its iconic culture of music, food and drink – and home to the most famous football teams in the world!

What's it like to live in North West?
Check out our region guide

The North West is made up of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Merseyside. Its two biggest cities, Liverpool and Manchester, have a special place in both football and music history. Ever heard of The Beatles or David Beckham?

The region was the heart of the industrial revolution – at one time, Lancashire produced half the world’s cotton. Many architectural reminders of this bygone era remain, like Liverpool’s Royal Albert Docks.

The stunning Lake District – home to England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike – needs no filters, while Blackpool is like a live and kicking seaside postcard.

And in these parts, you have two options when it comes to chips: curry sauce or gravy.
