Benefits of the Extended Project Qualification and transitions to higher education

Monday 4 February 2019 16:10 – 17:00

Summary

Aimed at new and experienced coordinators and supervisors of the EPQ

The Extended Project (EPQ) has become a pivotal Level 3 qualification over the last ten years. Universities value the independent working and academic research skills developed through the EPQ – increasingly offering adjustments on entry requirements for students who obtain A/A* grades. This interactive workshop – run by professional staff from the University of Leeds and the University of Southampton – will offer an insight into the dedicated programmes at both universities that support delivery of the taught skills element of the EPQ.

There will be reflections on diverse models of delivering the EPQ within schools, some common issues encountered by supervisors and coordinators of the project, and a presentation of data from both providers, showing the benefits of the EPQ for students transitioning and succeeding in higher education. The final 20 minutes of the session will consist of a Q&A, with the opportunity to input on best practice in delivering the EPQ.

The objective and intended outcome of this breakout workshop is to raise the profile of the EPQ, and awareness of sources of support, emphasise benefits of the qualification, and foster dialogue between teaching colleagues who may have differing levels of experience in supervising and/or coordinating the EPQ.
