How student finance is affected in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland

We understand that people will have various questions about student finance during the coronavirus outbreak. We have collated all the information and guidance on any changes that are being put in place for you below.

England and Wales

The Student Loans Company have partially reopened their contact centre following a temporary closure. They are now handling calls again, but you should bear in mind that current circumstances mean they have fewer colleagues than usual, and call volumes are extremely high.

So, to help support those in the most urgent need, please don’t call if you can avoid it.

New and existing students in England and Wales can continue to apply for student finance as normal, and SLC will continue to process any applications that have been received as quickly as they can.

SLC will continue to make scheduled payments – they have confirmed that providers will continue to receive scheduled tuition fee payments as normal, on receipt of confirmation that the student has registered with their university or college.

New students, current students, or customers in repayment can find more information at Student Finance England or Student Finance Wales. 


Scotland

Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) is advising that students can submit their applications for the academic year 2020/21 to www.saas.gov.uk from 1 April 2020.

SAAS is continuing to monitor the situation closely, and is asking people to refer to the new Student Information Scotland website. The site provides up to date information to students across both further and higher education (FE and HE) and is currently being used as a central point for COVID-19 funding information.


Northern Ireland

Student finance applications for the academic year 2020/21 has now opened for full-time higher education students.

New and existing students in NI can continue to apply for student finance as normal, and Student Finance NI (SFNI) will continue to process any applications that have been received as quickly as they can.

Student Finance NI have made changes to how they work, including closing direct access to their offices temporarily.  However, you can continue to email with your queries, scanned evidence, and documentation. Contact details and email addresses for your area are available on the SFNI website under ‘Find your Local Office.’
