Heather is a Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Derby with over 30 years' experience in medical ultrasound including general, obstetrics, gynaecology, vascular, breast and trauma applications. Her research interests over the past two decades have focused on the use of ultrasound for rapid diagnosis in the emergency department and in pre-hospital assessment.
Heather is currently Chair of CASE, the accrediting body for sonography in the UK, and a member of a national Imaging Workforce Group formed to advise government on transformation of diagnostic services.
She attended a very traditional girls grammar school where she was actively discouraged from following a career in science, despite a strong interest in physics and biology. This has led to a lifelong interest in the promotion of science careers for all. Heather has been a STEM ambassador for many years and a Trustee of a not-for-profit organization supporting high quality STEM and IT teaching in schools.
