Course summary

Curious about how your brain works?  Would you like to understand neurological diseases such as epilepsy, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s at an advanced level? Then our MSci in Neuroscience is for you. Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, in this course you'll study the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system, as well as neurological diseases and disorders.

Our degree programme convers concepts from the genome through to human based clinical neuroscience. Disciplines studied will include:

  • behaviour

  • cellular and molecular biology

  • experimental design

  • genetics

  • pharmacology

  • physiology

  • neuroanatomy

  • neuroimmune interactions

  • environmental neuroscience

Through optional modules and research projects, you can tailor the course to focus on the specific areas of neuroscience that interest you. You’ll be taught by leading scientists with a range of specialities to broaden your understanding of neuroscience.

Modules

There are a range of optional modules to choose from in every year of the course. You'll study these alongside core modules.

You'll get a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of neuroscience in year one, studying relevant aspects of human physiology and the essentials of cellular processes.

In the second year you'll consolidate the main areas and approaches to neuroscience, and gain specific training in practical techniques. You will cover many areas including behavioural neuroscience, neuroendocrinology and the ageing brain.

The research project is the main focus in your third year. This may be lab-based, working alongside researchers within the University. You'll also be able to chose from highly-specialised optional modules.

By studying the integrated masters (MSci), you’ll complete a year-long research project in your fourth year. This could be lab- or literature-based.

UCAS Tariff - Not accepted

A level - AAB

AAB including two science subjects, one of which must be biology/human biology and/or chemistry. Second science subject can be from biology, chemistry, electronics, statistics, geography, geology, human biology, maths, computer science, physics or psychology. A pass is required in science practical tests, if assessed separately.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDD

RQF Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science DDD considered on a case-by-case basis.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

Overall 45 level 3 credits including 30 level 3 graded credits at Distinction including 2 sciences, one of which must be biology or chemistry. The remaining 15 graded credits must be obtained at Merit or above. Modules will be considered on an individual basis; you may need to take certain modules and achieve a specified grade in those modules. Please contact us to discuss the transferability of your qualification.

Scottish Higher - AABBB

Acceptable when combined with Scottish Advanced Highers grades AA, including Biology or Chemistry plus a second science.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DD

RQF Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science at DD plus 1 A level in Biology or Chemistry at grade A.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D

RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate D plus 2 A levels including Biology or Chemistry and an acceptable second science at AB.

Pearson BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (QCF)

Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Scottish Advanced Higher - AA

including Biology or Chemistry plus a second science. Second science subject can be from biology, chemistry, electronics, statistics, geography, geology, human biology, maths, physics or psychology. Offers made in combination with Scottish Higher qualification, grades AABBB

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 points

32 Points with two Higher Level science subjects at grade 5, including one from Biology or Chemistry or 665 in 3 Higher Level IB certificates with two science subjects including one from Biology or Chemistry

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales - B

acceptable in combination with 2 science A level qualifications, to include Biology or Chemistry plus a second science. Overall grades required AAB

Extended Project - A

If you have already achieved your EPQ at grade A you will automatically be offered one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject. If you are still studying for your EPQ you will receive the standard course offer, and also an alternate offer with a condition of one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject if you achieve an A grade in your EPQ. If you qualify for a contextual offer, your EPQ will be taken into consideration and the appropriate adjustment will be made to your offer. Please note that if you qualify for an enhanced contextual offer, your EPQ will not be taken into consideration as we are unable to make any further adjustments to your offer.

including Biology or Chemistry and a second science subject

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) are also required.

AQA Certificate in Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) - A

If you have already achieved your Core Maths Qualification at grade A you will automatically be offered one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject. If you are still studying for your Core Maths Qualification you will receive the standard course offer, and also an alternate offer with a condition of one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject if you achieve an A grade in your Core Maths Qualification. Core Maths qualifications offered by other exam boards are also considered for an alternative offer.

T Level

Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Neuroscience is one of the progression pathways for our Science with a Foundation Year course. Requirements for progression are:

Foundation Biological Science - 55%
Foundation Chemistry - 55%
Overall pass - 40%
