This four-year Linguistics with Spanish degree concentrates on developing your understanding of how we communicate, and the growth of language in the mind.
Explore linguistics in the context of English and Spanish. You'll focus on the structure, history, and social aspects of English, Spanish, and language in general. Build a firm foundation of skills and knowledge to pursue many potential career paths.
You will study Spanish from an intermediate or advanced level depending on your previous experience. Building your fluency in Spanish alongside your study of linguistics will give you a unique perspective on the language.
In your third year, you'll immerse yourself in Spanish culture, as you spend the year in a Spanish-speaking country. Improve your language skills, boost your confidence, and gain a first-hand appreciation of the language in context.
Our cutting-edge Linguistics with Spanish programme is shaped by the research specialisms of our staff. You will explore the latest ideas and most exciting areas of linguistics, such as:
computational linguistics
child language acquisition
language variation
psycholinguistics
theoretical linguistics

Including Spanish. Candidates with AS level Spanish (minimum grade B) will also be considered.
We particularly encourage applicants with some qualifications in mathematical and/or scientific fields. As the course contains a combination of scientific thinking, language skills, and mathematical reasoning, it may be especially suited to the personality of students who have enjoyed both mathematics/science and arts/humanities subjects.
Applicants will be considered on an individual basis.
To include 15 level 3 credits in Spanish, or evidence of studying the language to the required level alongside it.

With grade 5 in Spanish at Higher Level.
Candidates who have some background in Maths and Science may be interested in the cognitive/brain science and quantitative elements of the course. Candidates who prefer Arts and Humanities subjects may be interested in the historical, sociological, and literary elements of the course.
If you offer the Level 3 Extended Project Qualification in a topic relevant to the degree programme, we may take this into account in our consideration of your application.
