In a multilingual world, understanding how language and literature shape identity, politics, and culture has never been more vital. Our BA Modern Languages and English Literature degree invites you to explore the power of words, across centuries, continents, and languages, while gaining the skills and fluency to communicate confidently in an ever more interconnected and interdependent world.
This dynamic, interdisciplinary degree combines the richness of studying literature in English with the intellectual and cultural depth of a modern language.
This unique combination of literary study with language practice, allows you to open doors to careers within and beyond the UK, from translation and cultural heritage to international organisations, museums, and cultural industries and beyond. The flexibility of language broadens your employability horizons, enabling you to work confidently with global partners and institutions and to communicate across borders comfortably.
Whilst the literature part of the degree complements these pathways by deepening your analytical abilities and nurturing the empathetic and cultural insight essential for you to contribute meaningfully to an interconnected and evolving global society.
Modules
In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: Theorising Gothic Texts; Discovering Literature; Reel Lives: Framing the Human Condition in European Film; Modern Languages - Introduction to Language Teaching; Computer Assisted Translation; Approaches to Gender in English Literature; Who Sings America? Literature and Culture of the United States.
In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: Capital(ising) Culture: Reimagining the city; Cinema in a World Context; Iberian Language (Catalan/Portuguese); Teaching Modern Foreign Languages to Young Learners 2; Community Interpreting; Debating Texts: Theory in Literature; Contentious Shakespeare.
In Year 3, you will typically study areas including: Dissertation; Welsh Gothic / Gothic Wales; Written in Blood: Reading the Vampire; Chaucer; Beyond Shakespeare; Further Fiction Writing; Creative Writing Personal Project.
Assessment method

Swansea University accepts the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales as fully equivalent to one full A-Level of the same grade.
GCSE/National 4/National 5
A GCSE at minimum grade C (4) in a modern foreign language is preferable but not essential.
All applications are considered on an individual basis, with GCSE grades, AS Level subjects and grades, work experience, references and personal statement taken into account. Variable offers are made dependent on subjects studied.
