Business Law

The LLB Business Law degree at Swansea University is a specialised programme that prepares you for careers at the intersection of law and business.

Grounded in a commitment to academic excellence and informed by research, the programme combines both theory and practice, enabling you to gain a detailed understanding of how legal frameworks operate within broader business, economic and global contexts. You will be required to critically engage with legal principles and their impact on commercial activity, developing analytical thinking, ethical reasoning, and a global perspective.

You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the foundations of legal knowledge, including Contract, Tort, Criminal Law, Public Law, Land Law, Equity and Trusts and EU Law. These core subjects satisfy the academic stage of training required by the Bar Standards Board, and provide a strong basis for those wishing to take the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.

As your studies progress, you can develop specialist expertise through compulsory business-focused modules such as Company Law, World Trade Law, and Commercial Sales, alongside a wide range of optional modules. This flexibility allows you to pursue your interests while building a strong business law profile.

Our Business Law programme places a strong emphasis on equipping you with the skills necessary for professional life. The curriculum is carefully designed to reflect the evolving landscape of legal education, including the changes introduced by the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), while maintaining the value of a traditional law degree.

You will be supported throughout the programme in developing a broad range of skills, such as legal writing, oral presentation and problem-solving. The inclusion of multiple-choice question (MCQ) assessments, which are a key feature of the SQE, further ensure that you are prepared for contemporary professional requirements.

Opportunities to gain real-world experience are embedded throughout the degree, including participation in the Law Clinic, where you can provide advice to clients under supervision, and there are opportunities to take part in mooting, negotiation, and client interviewing competitions.

Your first year of study is made up of compulsory modules covering a range of themes.

Compulsory modules are studied by all students on the programme, meaning you are automatically enrolled.

Examples of compulsory modules include:
• Contract Law
• Law of Tort
• Public Law

In your second and third year you will study a mixture of compulsory and optional modules from a wide range of subject areas.

Examples of optional modules in recent years have included:
• Commercial Sales
• Employment Law: Rights and Obligations
• Media Law
• Intellectual Property Law
• World Trade Law

Your final year will consist mostly of optional modules, with the option of undertaking an independent dissertation project.
