Overview
At UEA, we believe everyone should have the chance to study at degree level. You might not yet have the required grades. You may need a little extra support. You may need time to decide where your interests lie. If so, then our BA English Literature with Creative Writing with a Foundation Year is the perfect choice.
Our foundation year is an intensive and exciting year of study. You’ll focus on the topics which interest you. And you'll also create a toolkit of essential academic skills.
We’ll support you to work towards your own learning goals in an encouraging, rewarding environment. You'll study with dedicated lecturers from UEA’s Interdisciplinary Institute for the Humanities. In addition to English Literature and Creative Writing, you’ll explore a wide range of adjacent academic subjects, including Drama, History, Philosophy, Film, Media, History of Art and Politics. We’ll help you make connections between different disciplines to spark your curiosity.
While studying with us, you’ll have access to all the opportunities and resources that UEA and Norwich, the first UNESCO City of Literature, has to offer. You can attend events such as the acclaimed UEA Live. Be inspired by hearing current authors discuss their work live!
As you develop your own academic interests and passions, you’ll then be well-placed to progress onto the degree that’s the best fit for you. After successfully completing your foundation fear, you can move onto the BA English Literature with Creative Writing degree. Alternatively, you can request to transfer to one of a selection of other undergraduate courses within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, subject to taking the required prerequisite modules. Use the foundation year to springboard onto the degree of your choice. Take control of your future studies.

- Portfolio
- To progress to one of our Creative Writing BA courses, you will need to submit a portfolio of your writing and have it approved by our team. You can choose to submit your portfolio before starting your foundation year studies, or you can submit it at any point during your foundation year. We ask for around 3-5 pages of work, which can be on any subject and in any genre of the candidate's choice. Most choose to send poetry, prose, or a mixture of the two.

Additional fee information
Tuition fees increase annually for all students in subsequent years of study. Any fee increase is based on the fee for the year that you register. Home undergraduate fees, whose rates are regulated by the UK Government, will be amended in line with any alteration advised by the UK Government. Fees not regulated by the UK Government will increase by a maximum of 4% or RPI-X whichever is the higher. RPI-X is the Retail Prices Index excluding mortgage interest.
