Using project-based learning, you’ll be a trainee engineer from the start. You’ll plan, build and test prototypes in response to a range of stimulating briefs. And you can build on your knowledge and skills with our range of extracurricular options.
The Foundation Year is an extra year of study at the start of your degree. It’s designed to boost your academic skills and knowledge of your specialist area. When you successfully complete it, you can transfer seamlessly into the full degree programme.
Like all our Engineering courses, Mechanical Engineering shares a common first year, which means you can choose to switch to a different pathway in your second year. It also offers a four-year Integrated Masters (MEng) option. This lets you study a year at postgraduate level on top of your degree.

Mechanical engineers are highly valued by a range of industries, including nanotechnology, aerospace and windfarms. You’ll learn transferable skills as well as technical knowledge that employers are looking for.
Thanks to our accreditations, you’ll be well on your way to becoming an Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer when you graduate. We’re in the process of becoming accredited by the Women in Engineering Society too.
Previous Hull graduates have secured roles with BAE Systems, British Energy, Williams F1 and Rolls Royce.

You'll be assessed through a combination of written, practical and coursework assessments throughout your degree.
Written assessment typically includes exams and multiple choice tests.
Practical is an assessment of your skills and competencies. This could include presentations, school experience, work experience or laboratory work.
Coursework typically includes essays, written assignments, dissertations, research projects or producing a portfolio of your work.
Professionally accredited courses provide industry-wide recognition of the quality of your qualification.
The following entry points are available for this course:
GCSE Maths at grade 6/B. Equivalent qualifications are not accepted.
The foundation year is designed for applicants whose qualifications and experience do not allow direct entry to the undergraduate degree. We expect applicants to demonstrate an experience of a related subject and an aptitude for academic work which may be determined by an essay and/or interview alongside the application.
For applicants with Level 3 qualifications, we will usually require a minimum of 80 points.
