Course summary

What is BA Modern Languages?
BA Modern Languages is a three-year degree, with opportunities to study abroad, taught at our Colchester campus.

Language is fundamental to our thought, relationships, and societies. Through language we share knowledge, build connections, and engage with cultures across the world. On this course, you'll develop advanced language skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the societies, histories, and cultures in which those languages are spoken.

Why this course
Our course allows you to study up to three languages, choosing from French, German, Italian, and Spanish at beginner or post-A level standard, while Portuguese can be studied from a pre-A level standard. Alongside language learning, you'll take language expert modules that develop cultural knowledge and professional skills.

Beyond language acquisition, you'll explore global cultures, histories, and political developments, enabling you to understand countries and communities in a deeper and more meaningful way.

If you want a global outlook, are interested in communication across cultures, and want to study a degree with real-world practical value, Modern Languages at Essex offers an excellent foundation.
