LLB Law and Accounting & Finance (MN14) is a joint honours degree scheme that covers two stimulating, challenging and complimentary disciplines. You will be taught across two departments: the Law & Criminology Department, the oldest and most established department of its kind in Wales and Aberystwyth Business School, made up of staff that have a wide range of expertise, technical skills and real-world business experience. For the legal aspects of the course you will receive a balanced approached to teaching with practical application alongside theoretical study. There are a wide range of modules to choose from, helping tailor your learning to your interests. The accounting & finance elements of the course will cover several topics including financial accounting, financial management and corporate markets.
Why study LLB Law and Accounting & Finance at Aberystwyth University?
The Law side of the degree scheme encompasses a mixture of traditional and contemporary legal subjects. There is also a practical element designed to meet employer needs and taught by experienced legal professionals and academics.
Department of Law & Criminology lecturers are mostly either qualified to PhD level or have professional experience and qualifications as practicing lawyers. Many staff also have a PGCE (in Higher Education).
There is an option to participate in our national and international competing Mooting Society, in order to develop your key advocacy and litigation skills.
The Accounting & Finance side of the degree includes modules in financial accounting, management accounting, accounting & finance specialisms and data analytics.
Business School staff are active researchers and expert practitioners in their chosen subject areas, including qualified accountants.
In your final year, there is a heavy legal focus where you can explore topics including commercial law, criminal law, human rights, international law, sports law & society and police, policing & society.
What will I learn?
The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the three year degree scheme.
In your first year, you will receive core training in legal and criminal justice systems; Contract law, Criminal Law or Tort Law, which must be studied and passed for exemption from the first stage of professional law examinations; You will cover the fundamentals of Accounting & Finance; Quantitative techniques and the use of specialist statistical software. In the second year of study, you'll have the choice of a range of Law and Accounting & Finance related modules. In the third year, there is a sole focus on law-related and legal modules from commercial law to treatment & rehabilitation of offenders.
LLB Law and Accounting & Finance opens up a range of exciting opportunities for you. You will be a candidate for further training to become a barrister, solicitor or accountant. LLB Law offers you the possibility to succeed in many different areas including financial management, business, human resources, international relations, journalism and education.
