Supporting Young Adult Student Carers

At Bangor University, we place a high priority on caring for and supporting all our students.

The University is aware that caring may have financial implications with students experiencing higher travel costs and or find themselves less able to work part-time to supplement their student finance awards.

To help ease some of these financial worries we provide full time UK undergraduate and taught postgraduate young adult carers with a £1,000 Bursary from the University’s Hardship Fund.

A Young Carer is Someone under the age of 25, when they started their course, who looks after a member of the family, partner or friend with a physical or sensory disability, learning disability, medical condition, mental health issues or someone addicted to drugs, alcohol or gambling.

If you are a Carer who is paid a salary for your caring duties or are in receipt of Carer’s Allowance you are not eligible for this bursary.

Eligibility

To be eligible students must be:

  • a full time undergraduate or postgraduate taught home
  • be under 25 when you started your course
  • be eligible for funding as a “home” UK student
  • and be an unpaid primary carer for a family member or friend with an illness or disability, mental health condition or an addiction.

Evidence Required

We will need evidence to prove your Young Carer's status. This evidence should detail your caring responsibilities and not why the person you care for needs support.

  • evidence you were in receipt of Carers Allowance before starting your current course
  • or a letter of support on headed note paper or organisation email from : a third-party professional, e.g. school Teacher, Personal Tutor, GP or medical professional or carers support group or support worker

Please note: Students will apply for this bursary annually and will  be required to provide evidence of their ongoing caring responsibilities for each academic year.
