The Beatrice Shilling Scholarship

Scholarship information

This Scholarship is open to UK fee-paying students who are women and hold an offer to study an undergraduate engineering course starting in September 2026. The subjects included are:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical, Electronic and Mechatronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Integrated Foundation Year with one of the courses above

There are 20 awards for £2,000 per year of study (up to four years). Scholarships will be awarded to the highest performing applicants or those with the highest potential to attain based on their UCAS application within each engineering discipline (at least two students per discipline). 

If you're successful, you'll be notified by the end of April. To accept, you'll need to select the engineering course at Manchester as your firm choice via UCAS.

To be considered, you need to:  

  • be a woman (inclusive of trans women) / be assigned female at birth (such as AFAB non-binary);
  • have an offer of study an undergraduate engineering course at The University of Manchester, starting September 2026;
  • be recognised as a UK resident and paying home (UK) fees;
  • have chosen Manchester as your firm choice by the June UCAS deadline;
  • commit to contributing to outreach and recruitment activities, especially encouraging more women to study engineering; 
  • achieve a minimum of 60% average performance during each year of study.   

In addition to the financial support, you'll become part of our valued Shilling community at Manchester. You'll have access to an academic mentor, who is a friendly face within the Faculty that you can go to for academic advice and pastoral support. Your mentor can support you with career development opportunities as well as helping you to build networks with peers and other female engineers. 

Payment will not be made during the Industrial Experience Year.
