As a first-generation immigrant, born in Italy to Bangladeshi parents and raised in the UK, my perspective on international relations was shaped from a young age by diverse background. This unique background, situated at the crossroads of different identities, ignited a deep-seated passion for politics and international relations. I was driven not only by a curiosity about global affairs but also by a clear recognition of the underrepresentation of people who look like me in these fields. This realisation solidified my ambition to pursue a career where I can contribute a much-needed voice.

My professional aspirations are firmly set on a career within the UK Civil Service, specifically targeting the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). I am an ambitious student, actively seeking to expand my practical experiences within the diplomatic sphere to build a strong foundation for this path. Hi, I’m Yasmin! I’m a second year BSc Politics and Economics (joint honours) student at the University of Southampton. I really enjoy studying the intersection between politics, economics and public policy, especially thinking about how economic decisions impact people’s lives and the ethical questions behind policy choices.

I’m very involved in university life, so I’m happy to answer questions beyond just the course itself. I previously worked in University Accommodations as a General Assistant, so if you have any questions about halls, how accommodation works, or adjustments and support available, I’d be a great person to speak to. I’m also involved in ambassador schemes, including being a Work Experience Ambassador, so I can help with internships, placements, and building experience alongside your degree.

Outside of academics, I’m Health and Wellbeing Officer for Art Society and involved in Bollywood Dance Society (and previously Ballet). I love painting, travelling, and listening to music, particularly indie rock. I grew up in Bristol and always knew I wanted to live in the big city! Studying Law in London is an incredible opportunity, as you're right in the heart of where it all happens. The PPL course in particular gives me a great holistic insight into the humanitarian questions around law - What is justice? How can we establish a stable democracy? - whilst granting me a comprehensive understanding of how our judicial and political institutions are currently running. Being able to finish this degree with the LLB qualification whilst studying modules which question and challenge those institutions is truly rewarding. My career prospects are certainly in Law, most likely corporate. However, as I love to sing, I would like to pursue music at some point in my life - so am considering alternative postgraduate options.
