Student support
We’re committed to supporting students with their application, preparations to begin their course, throughout their studies, and into their career. Our range of student support services will be with you every step of the way.
Applying for your course
Every year, we welcome the brightest and best students, regardless of background. Achieving a strong set of school or college grades is key to earning a place at the University. That can be challenging, and we know grades are influenced by things outside of your control. That’s why every year we look at each application in detail, including any circumstances that may have impacted your potential.
You can find out about the range of factors we consider, including whether you have been eligible for free school meals or if you are care-experienced, from our contextual admissions guide.
Before you start
We have one of Scotland’s longest-running summer schools, helping students get off to the best possible start to their new course. You can find the details of our online and on-campus summer schools on our website.
Support on your course
Studying for a degree can be tough, so we have a wide range of support teams to help. We have a convenient guide to all the support we offer our students, but here's a quick overview:
Academic Skills Centre: advice and support for students to enhance their academic skills.
Counselling Service: friendly, supportive, and confidential help to talk through an issue.
Disability Services: individual support if you have a specific learning difficulty, disability, or long-term medical condition. We contact new students in the run-up to their new course so we can begin to get support in place.
Enquiry Centre: quick answers to quick questions.
Global Room: social space for students to relax and meet new people.
Health Service: short-term, specialist input to improve your mental health.
International Advice Service: immigration and practical guidance for living and studying in the UK.
Peer Connections: trained student volunteers who provide support and information to new students.
Student Funding: funding support, financial education, laptop loan, sustainable period products, and menstrual/menopause education.
Student Support: practical help with issues or challenges impacting on your studies or personal life.
We also offer dedicated support for students who are care-experienced, estranged, or young carers.
BSL users can contact us via an online BSL/English interpreter through Contact Scotland.
Careers
You’ll graduate career ready – we have an excellent record of graduate employment, with 89% of our students being in work or further study 15 months after graduating (HESA 2025). We’re also 2nd in Scotland for graduate prospects (The Guardian University Guide 2026).
Our courses are designed with employability in mind. Over 300 employers visit campus each year, collaborating with students through vacancies, placements, consultancy projects, and immersive experiences.
Our Careers Service, a team of trained and dedicated professionals, is there to support you during your studies and after you graduate, helping you to achieve your aspirations. This includes via 1:1 appointments with a Careers Adviser, and our careers fairs, skills sessions, and networking events.
The Careers Service can also offer support you in finding part-time work whilst studying – from CV support to their part-time jobs fair, and the University JobShop (an online jobs portal).
You can also find guidance from our Centre for Entrepreneurship, which offers opportunities to develop your enterprise skills and improve your employability.
