National Careers Week 2026

Whether you're thinking about university, an apprenticeship, or still figuring it out, this week is about helping you explore your options, build confidence, and take one practical step towards your future.

National Careers Week (2 until 7 March) is the perfect time to pause and focus on your future. Whether you already have a career in mind or are just starting to explore, this page will help you discover options that genuinely fit you.

Use the step-by-step guide to begin exploring careers, understand the different pathways that can get you there, and compare what’s possible. Throughout the week, you’ll also find daily tips and spotlight tools to help you take practical steps forward – from trying the careers quiz to exploring subjects and real student stories.

You don’t need to have everything mapped out. Start here, this week, and build clarity one step at a time.

Ready to start your career journey?

Explore our career action checklist below and start working through the steps to discover your future options. If you are at the beginning of your journey, there is no pressure to make firm decisions. The most important thing is to research widely and consider a range of different pathways.

We have highlighted a selection of tools that link to each stage of the checklist to support you as you progress. Check back each day and follow our social channels for additional tools, insights, and activities throughout National Careers Week.

  1. 1

Step 1 – Discover what matters to you

Good career choices start with understanding you – your strengths, interests, and values. Start by looking for patterns, not perfect answers.

☐ List your favourite subjects and activities
☐ Write three things you’re good at (ask others if you’re unsure)
☐ Think about what motivates you (creativity, helping people, stability, earning potential?)
☐ Note what you don’t enjoy – this is just as useful

  2. 2

Step 2 – Explore career ideas

Don’t limit yourself to what feels safe or familiar. Be curious and explore all kinds of possibilities.

☐ Search careers linked to your interests or subjects
☐ Shortlist 3-5 careers to explore further
☐ Watch “day-in-the life” videos or read job profiles
☐ Try virtual work experience, part-time work, or volunteering if possible

  3. 3

Step 3 – Understand the routes

There’s often more than one way into a career. Take time to research different options and find the right fit for you.

☐ Check which subjects, qualifications, or grades are typically needed
☐ Explore different pathways (university, college, apprenticeship, work-based routes)
☐ Note the skills universities, colleges, and employers look for

  4. 4

Step 4 – Compare and reflect

Pause regularly to reflect – this is where decisions can begin to take shape.

☐ Compare two careers or pathways side-by-side (environment, daily tasks, future prospects)
☐ Write three related skills you already have
☐ Identify one skill you want to develop
☐ Talk your ideas through with someone you trust

  5. 5

    Step 5 – Take action

It’s completely normal not have it all figured out. Focus on your next small step (not the whole plan).

☐ Continue planning your future using the UCAS Hub
☐ Set one goal for this term (e.g. research courses or attend a talk)
☐ Set one goal for next term (e.g. arrange work experience or a taster day)
