Study in Aberystwyth

City guide

Wondering what life is like in Aberystwyth? This scenic Welsh coastal town offers stunning landscapes, academic excellence, and a uniquely welcoming student community.

Aberystwyth at a glance

Perched on the west coast of Wales, Aberystwyth is a university town unlike any other. With the sea on one side and mountains on the other, it’s the perfect place for students who want a slower pace of life surrounded by natural beauty. Home to Aberystwyth University, this small town offers a tight-knit student experience, where it’s easy to make friends and feel part of the local community. The town blends Welsh culture, seaside charm, and academic heritage to create a distinctive environment that’s particularly appealing to international students.

Aberystwyth is by the sea and has the best sunsets from the beach. Autumn and spring are beautiful in the town and surrounding Welsh countryside, but winter [is] a special treat too. Watch the starlings as they congregate above the pier and dance in the sky at sundown. The area is great for walking, and you can get everywhere in town on foot. But the hill up to the campus is a toughie! You'll get fit living here. (Aberystwyth University student)

City highlights

Aberystwyth’s waterfront is its centrepiece. Take a stroll along the Victorian promenade, catch the sunset at Constitution Hill, or brave the traditional student custom of ‘kicking the bar’. The National Library of Wales, one of the most important cultural institutions in the UK, is based here and open to students and visitors. You’ll also find indie cinemas, local galleries, and plenty of seasonal festivals and student-led events that bring the town to life.

Aberystwyth nightlife
Second year student, Aberystwyth University

The bars and pubs are all spread over town, but you can walk to all of them easily. Pier is a more typical nightclub you might find in a city. If you join a society or sports club, then socials will generally be a bit of a pub/bar crawl for the first part of the night and then end in one of the two. Being such a small town, everyone knows each other, making nights out even more fun and social.

Living in Aberystwyth
Third year student, Aberystwyth University

I live near South Beach looking over the sea. In first year I also lived in town. I have loved living in both these places, as opposed to halls on campus, as you are always so close to the sea, pubs, supermarkets, and the train station. I'm never really further than a ten-minute walk away from where I need to be. However it does mean the university is a 25-minute walk uphill from town, but at least it wakes you up for the day! Nowhere is really far from anywhere in 'Aber'.

On your doorstep

Aberystwyth’s location in the heart of Ceredigion means endless natural beauty is just a bus ride or hike away. Explore the Cambrian Mountains or nearby beaches like Borth and Ynyslas. Devil’s Bridge Falls is a must-see with its dramatic waterfalls and scenic trails. For a day in the city, head to Cardiff or Birmingham by train, or explore Snowdonia National Park for mountain hikes and breathtaking views.

Aberystwyth pier at sunset

Pier at sunset: Looking out to sea at that time of day can put things into perspective when you think about how big the sea is, and how small you are. I don't think you really were an Aber student if you didn't watch the sunset on the seafront at least once. (Rosie, third year student at Aberystwyth University)

Basic safety

It’s important to adhere to basic safety practices when studying and living in any city. Being aware of your surroundings is always wise, especially in busy and populated areas.
