Our highly interdisciplinary programme features links with the Bristol Institute for Scientific Computing (BriSC) as well as exposure to real-world problems from our industry partners.

You will study units involving a blend of theoretical background and practical skills designed especially for this new course, including Mathematical Tools for Data Science, Advanced Linear Modelling and Classification, and Algorithms and Machine Learning.

Our Data Science BSc is accredited by IMA and RSS.

This course is currently undergoing its scheduled five-year re-accreditation process with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). It has previously been accredited by IMA. The outcome of the current review is expected by July 2026.

Standard offer: A*AA including A* in Mathematics and A in Further Maths or another mathematics-related subject. Contextual offer: AAB including A in Mathematics and A in Further Maths or another mathematics-related subject. Mathematics-related subjects include Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Economics; and Physics. STEP paper achievement may be included as part of an alternative offer.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

D*DD in either Engineering BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma, plus A in Mathematics at A-level (or equivalent) OR any Applied General BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma, plus A in A-level Mathematics (or equivalent). Applicants taking Engineering BTEC may be invited to take the University of Bristol Maths test in place of A-level Mathematics.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

Access to HE Diploma in Engineering, Science, or Computing (or similar titles) with 30 credits at distinction and 15 at merit, and A in A-level Mathematics. Or Access to HE Diploma in Engineering, Science, or Computing (or similar titles) with 30 credits at distinction and 15 at merit, including at least 12 credits at distinction in Mathematics (including algebra, calculus and trigonometry), and achieving the required level in the Bristol School of Mathematics Test. Mature students can contact mature-students@bristol.ac.uk to check the suitability of their Access course.

Scottish Higher - AAAAA

Standard Higher: AAAAA.

Scottish Advanced Higher - AA

Advanced Higher: AA in Mathematics and another mathematics-related subject (including Mathematics of Mechanics). Mathematics-related subjects include Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Economics; and Physics. STEP paper achievement may be included as part of an alternative offer.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 - 38 points

Standard offer: 38 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, including 7 at Higher Level in Mathematics (either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretations) and 6 at Higher Level in another mathematics-related subject. Contextual offer: 34 points overall with 17 at Higher Level, including 6, 6 at Higher Level in Mathematics (either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretations) and another mathematics-related subject. Requirements are as for A-levels, where you can substitute a non-subject specific grade for the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales or the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate at that grade.

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

Requirements are as for A-levels, where you can substitute a non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate at that grade.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

Requirements for principal subjects are as for A-level, where D1/ D2 is A*, D3 is A, M1/ M2 is B, and M3 is C.
