Course summary
Portuguese is taught by native speakers who specialise in the cultures and societies of the Portuguese-speaking world, including Brazil, Portugal and Lusophone Africa. This degree programme studies cinema and television as major forces of enjoyment and knowledge within modern culture.

Portuguese at Glasgow offers a varied programme, in which you will work in small groups with native speakers from Portugal and Brazil.
The programme has long-established links with the Instituto Camões.
You will have full access to our Language Resources Centre, which offers excellent audiovisual, digital and printed materials. The lecturers in Film & Television Studies at Glasgow are leading researchers in their field, and they bring this expertise into their teaching. We have strong connections with Glasgow’s creative and cultural organisations, representatives of which contribute to our programme (eg talks from policymakers and screen practitioners on our core course Media & Cultural Policy).

Graduates with qualifications in modern languages and cultures have gone on to pursue rewarding careers in business and commerce, marketing, media, teaching, translating & interpreting and the Civil Service. This programme is a valuable preparation for careers in various aspects of the media, arts and cultural industries as well as for non-media-related careers (eg teaching, public relations). Immediate job destinations for recent graduates include production coordinator for BBC Studios, PR assistant for a creative communications agency and diversity standards’ analyst for the British Film Institute. Older graduates have gone on to establish successful careers as TV producers, arts administrators, educators and leaders within non-profit organisations.
