Interpret texts with skill and a critical eye while exploring diverse societies and cultural changes throughout history

What’s the relationship between a piece of literature and the time it was written in? How are writers affected by their circumstances? What influence do literary texts have on social, cultural and political life? Study this combination of subjects to link the social and political history of a period with its literary texts, giving you the chance to reflect on these questions and more.

Surrounded by outstanding museums and resources, you’ll expand your knowledge as you explore different histories and perspectives from Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States. At the same time, you’ll unravel cultural history and the historical approach to literature, social justice, mixed media and more.

Exciting career opportunities ahead

Our English teaching team is made up of 40 academics who are either world experts or rising stars – you might have already come across them on the radio or TV. The history team are equally expert. One of our history professors wrote and presented the BBC series ‘Suffragettes Forever! The Story of Women and Power’. Both subjects are a fantastic launchpad into many careers. You could apply your knowledge directly in a museum or heritage role. Or use your communication and analytical skills in a career in publishing, policy making, social research or the Civil Service. With our support, you’ll soon be creating your own history.

In History, you will take the following compulsory module:

History in Practice
History Essay 1
History Essay 2

You then select one of the following modules:

Unravelling Britain: British History since 1801
Global Encounters: conquest and Culture in World History

You choose your remaining credits from a selection of Level 4 History modules.

Assessment typically includes a combination of coursework (essays, projects, presentations, log books and portfolios) and exams.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Queen Mary University of London welcomes applications from students currently studying Level 3 BTEC qualifications and will consider you for entry to the majority of our undergraduate courses. The typical entry requirements will vary according to the course you are applying for.

Some of our courses require specific subject knowledge which you may not be able to cover as part of a Level 3 BTEC qualification and we may therefore require additional Level 3 qualifications to ensure that you are suitably prepared for relevant courses. A small number of our courses do not accept BTEC qualifications for entry, either as a standalone qualification, or in combination with other qualifications at Level 3.

Access to HE Diploma D: 15 credits M: 15 credits

We consider applications from students with the Access to Higher Education Diploma. The minimum academic requirement is to achieve 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 15 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 30 points

5,5,5 in HL subjects.

Extended Project

We consider applications from students offering an EPQ and may make an alternative offer to include three A levels, one grade lower than our usual requirement, along with a specific grade in the EPQ. For further information please visit: qmul.ac.uk/undergraduate/entry/epq

GCSE/National 4/National 5

A minimum of five GCSE passes to include English at grade C or 4 or an acceptable equivalent will be required.
