Course summary

The Philosophy component of this programme offers students a rigorous, inclusive, and research-informed education in philosophy. Students develop as analytical, critical, and creative thinkers, capable of engaging with abstract ideas and complex arguments, as well as with pressing ethical, political, and cultural issues. Students engage with philosophical traditions beyond the Western mainstream and with perspectives from historically underrepresented groups. Graduates of the programme are well prepared for postgraduate study and for a wide range of graduate careers, having developed advanced skills in critical reasoning, communication, independent enquiry, and ethical reflection, alongside the confidence to engage thoughtfully and responsibly with complex ideas in academic, professional, and public contexts.

Our Minor in Catalan is designed to develop exceptional linguistic competence, enabling students to reach proficiency by the completion of their studies. Through rigorous and progressive language training, you will refine advanced skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Teaching is enriched by authentic cultural texts and contemporary news materials, fostering informed engagement with society across Catalan-speaking regions. A dynamic programme of extracurricular activities further enhances your experience, while an optional Year Abroad strengthens fluency and deepens intercultural understanding. Studying Catalan strengthens your CV, signalling initiative, adaptability and specialist expertise sought by employers at home and internationally.

This programme is available with a Year in Industry, which will be spent on paid placement within an organisation in industry, broadly defined. You will be supported by the School of the Arts and the Department throughout, and your reflexive written account of the experience will contribute towards your final degree result. Please note it is not possible to study both a Year in Industry and a Year Abroad on this programme.

Combined Degrees

Most Combined Degrees allow you to adapt the weighting of each by 25% after the first year, helping you to keep your options open. Please note, however, students studying either a Business or Economics pathway in combination with another subject cannot increase from 25% to 50% or from 50% to 75% and it is not possible to transfer from a 50% to 75% Law. Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and 3 A levels and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade A in the EPQ, for example the offer would be AAB or ABB plus A in the EPQ.

If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2027, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income.

Tuition fees are subject to increase each year, subject to the government’s regulated fee limits. For UK students applying for 2027 entry the Tuition Fee is £10,050.
