Creative Writing

Our relation to the written word, literary art and the concept of creativity is constantly changing, and understanding it is as urgent as ever. This degree is a dynamic programme that foregrounds new developments in writing from diverse cultures and traditions, and explores a broad range of techniques, approaches and genres, including contemporary fiction and non-fiction, poetry, spoken word and performance poetry, writing for stage and screen, digital writing, experimental writing, DIY publishing and hybrid forms.

The programme encourages imaginative, experimental and expressive reflection on the construction and reception of texts, as well as developing the practices, skills and toolsets to produce original works. Learning to consider texts critically for the decisions and mechanics that go into making them, students of Creative Writing equip themselves with a nuanced sense of writing’s place in contemporary society.

This programme will:

• Enable students to explore a variety of genres and approaches to writing through lectures and creative workshops
• Encourage wide and diverse writing and reading practices
• Enhance students’ capacity for creative, critical and imaginative enquiry through knowledge of forms and theories of contemporary literary production
• Equip students with nuanced understandings of authorship, readership and editing
• Support the development of sophisticated understandings of the contemporary literary context
• Equip students with tools and knowledge of craft to develop a sophisticated writing practice
• Support students creatively and critically to develop original work.
