To understand the United States, its history, literature, politics, and culture, is to understand the global forces that are shaping today’s world.

American Studies at Swansea University offers you an in-depth exploration of the most influential country of the modern era, from its colonial origins to contemporary challenges. This dynamic degree tackles urgent global issues such as civil rights, racial justice, and the rise of the new right.

You will have the flexibility to shape this degree around your interests, whether they be in American popular culture, political activism, media, migration, or foreign policy. You can also spend a semester or full academic year studying in the United States or Canada, gaining valuable first-hand insight into North American society.

This programme includes opportunities to undertake a Year Abroad, enhancing your learning and offering invaluable life experience.

Modules

In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: Introduction to American Literature and Culture, War and Peace in the Nuclear Age, Politics and the People

In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: The Making of Transatlantic America, Global Justice and Human Rights in the Age of Globalisation

In Year 3 , your final year will include an compulsory independent dissertation project. You will typically study areas including: The Cold War, Clear and Present Danger: America and Terrorism

Assessment method

We offer a variety of assessment methods within our programmes. In addition to traditional examinations and essays, examples of alternative assessment include:

• Personal Reflection

We recognise the EPQ as an excellent indicator of success.

If you are predicted a Grade B or above in the EPQ, you will receive an offer with a one
grade reduction, to include your EPQ with a grade B.
