You’ll explore the fundamentals of building surveying and construction, including building technology, design principles, environmental services and material science. Practical sessions introduce land and construction surveying, architectural drawing and CADD, while a residential field course gives you hands-on experience of the construction process and professional roles.

Year 2
You’ll build on your first-year knowledge and focus on core aspects of building surveying in more depth. Key areas include building pathology and defect diagnosis, construction methods, cost and contract administration and professional practice. You’ll also develop skills in BIM and explore environmental services for complex buildings, combining technical expertise with sustainable and responsible design approaches.

Optional Placement Year
You can choose a salaried professional placement after year two, gaining hands-on experience with building surveying practices, property consultancies or construction firms. This year allows you to apply your academic knowledge to real-world projects such as building inspections, defect analysis, refurbishment planning and contract administration.

You’ll develop practical skills in surveying techniques, project management and client collaboration, while building valuable industry contacts. The placement enhances your employability and confidence, giving you a competitive edge for careers in building surveying and related fields.

Final year
You’ll complete an independent research project and advance your professional expertise through modules in building pathology, life-care planning and advanced surveying practice.
