Course summary

This Foundation Year in Clinical Technology is designed to prepare you for degree-level study in clinical technology and healthcare engineering. It provides a supportive entry point if you do not yet meet the requirements for direct entry onto a degree, or if you are returning to study.

During the year, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand how engineering and technology are applied within healthcare. You will explore how mathematical, physical and computational principles underpin modern technologies used in clinical and medical environments.

You will build a strong foundation in core technical subjects, including mathematics, physics, materials and computing, while developing essential academic and professional skills such as communication, problem-solving and independent learning. Through project work and practical activities, you will begin to analyse technical problems, work with data and develop your skills in design and visualisation.

Successful completion of the Foundation Year allows you to progress onto the Clinical Technology BSc (Hons), where you will develop specialist knowledge and skills in areas such as medical devices, physiological measurement and healthcare technologies.

Assessment method

The Foundation Year uses a range of teaching methods to support your transition to university-level study. You will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical sessions, where you will explore key technical concepts and apply them to real-world problems.

You will study core topics that introduce you to mathematics, physics, materials and computing, alongside modules designed to develop your academic and professional skills. Teaching is structured to help you build confidence in understanding technical systems, working with data and using digital tools to support problem-solving and visualisation.

Throughout the year, there is a strong emphasis on developing your academic skills and preparing you for degree-level study. You will be supported to improve your approach to learning, including how to analyse information, apply technical knowledge and communicate your ideas effectively.

Assessment varies across modules and may include coursework, technical reports, practical tasks, presentations and examinations. You will receive regular feedback to support your development, with assessments designed to help you build confidence and prepare for the expectations of further study.
