Course summary
Summary
Digital media is reshaping how we tell stories and how we experience the world. This course explores what that means for film, television and beyond.
You will examine how digital cultures influence the way we live, work and connect with each other. You will explore how platforms have transformed how audiences create and consume media, and how this continues to evolve.
Alongside critical study, you will be part of a creative community where ideas become practice. From student led film societies to the Southampton Student Film Festival, you will have opportunities to create, collaborate and share your work.
As you progress, you will develop analytical, creative and technical skills, preparing you for careers across film, television and the wider digital media landscape.

Modules
Over the three years of this course, you will explore a broad range of modules in film analysis, screen and digital media, exploring their historical, industrial, and cultural impact on society and the environment.
Year 1: Establish a strong foundation with core modules in digital media contexts & histories and cultures; film analysis; media theory, and technological innovations.
Year 2: Explore digital media and the world of work; professional practice; key debates in television alongside optional modules in areas such as animation, audiences, global cinemas, data environmentalism, and queering the digital.
Year 3: Study Abroad
Year 4: Undertake a written or practical dissertation on a topic of your choice alongside optional modules in areas such as Crime TV, environmental cinema, screen industries, music in film and TV, and video games.

Assessment method
The learning and assessment activities for this course include the following:
The programme is progressively structured to develop transferable skills and those of research (information retrieval), formal writing and presentation.
It also includes, practical forms of assessment such as video essays and data visualisation that involve the processes of planning, producing, reviewing and revising individually, or as part of a group, to simulate workplace and industrial activity."

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).
Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)
We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.
The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
