Course summary

This is an undergraduate course (BSc with Hons) based on our successful Master of Public Health course. Our BSc Public Health course is aimed at applicants from around the world who are interested in a career in public health or are seeking new skills in this area. Contemporary public health practice requires practitioners to be adaptable and flexible, with a broad experience of a range of subject areas.

You will learn within a research-active public health department. The course can be taken both full-time and part-time and you will be able to make use of the world-class learning facilities on campus.

This course will equip you with:

  • the skills and knowledge to apply to public health concerns at local, national and international level;

  • the ability to apply relevant theory and scientific principles to practical situations;

  • the capability of meeting core competencies in public health.

UCAS Tariff - Not accepted

A level - BBB

BBB in three subjects. Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A Level taken. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offer you will receive. Applicants taking A Levels are normally expected to offer three full A Levels. If you’re taking more than three A Levels, these won’t be included in your offer. We will only make offers consisting of three A Levels.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDD

We consider the National Extended Diploma for entry provided it is in a subject relevant to the chosen course (BTEC Health and Social Care or Applied Science). Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Extended Diploma with grades DDD. One-third of the units undertaken must be in a science or science-related subject.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3). The specific course requirements are: of the 45 credits at level 3, 30 must be at Distinction grade and the remaining 15 credits at merit grade. Also, 30 of the 45 level 3 credits must be in science or health-science related subjects. You must also have GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or above. We no longer accept equivalents to GCSE for English and Maths. We also consider other factors on an individual basis, such as additional educational achievements, life experience and work related skills.

Scottish Higher

We require grades ABBBB to include one of: Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Further Maths, Psychology, Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Applied Science, Computer Science.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DD

We consider the National Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Diploma with grades DD plus an additional A-level at grade B. Either the National Diploma or the A-level must be in a science or health-related subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, or Applied Science.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

We consider the National Foundation Diploma. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Foundation Diploma with grades DD plus two additional A-levels at grade BB at least one science or science-related subject (Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, or Applied Science).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D

We consider the National Extended Certificate for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Extended Certificate with grade D plus two additional A-levels at grades BB. Either the National Extended Certificate or the A-level must be in a science or health-related subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, or Applied Science.

Scottish Advanced Higher

We require grades ABBBB to include one of: Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics, Further Maths, Psychology, Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Applied Science, Computer Science.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 33 points

We require 33 points overall with grades 5,5,5 in higher level subjects (one of which must include Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics [Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation], Physics, Geography, Geology, Computer Science or Psychology). We will consider a number of other comparable qualifications, studied in the UK and internationally. Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

The University welcomes and recognises the value of the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma/Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate and usually requires two A-levels or equivalent to be included within this. The minimum grade required for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma/Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate is Grade B and two A-levels at grade BB, normally including at least one science from the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, Applied Science. GCSEs must include English Language and Maths at a minimum of Grade C or 4 or above.

Extended Project

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement. A number of our academic Schools may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including at least five GCSEs at minimum grade C/4, including at least a Grade 4 or C in GCSE/IGCSE English Language and Mathematics. GCSE/IGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/IGCSE English Language. Please note that if you hold English as a second language IGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of  our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications  or achieve a higher grade in your IGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the admissions team in your academic School/Department for clarification.

OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - DDD

We consider the Technical Extended Diploma for entry provided it is in a subject relevant to the chosen course (CTEC Health and Social Care or Applied Science). Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Extended Diploma with grades DDD with one-third of the units undertaken in science or science related subjects.

OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma - DD

We consider the Technical Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Diploma with grades DD plus an additional A-level at grade B. Either the Technical Diploma or the A-level must be in a science or health-related subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, or Applied Science.

OCR Cambridge Technical Foundation Diploma

We consider the Technical Foundation Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Foundation Diploma with grades DD plus two A-levels at Grades BB. Either the Technical Foundation Diploma or the A-levels must be in a science or health-related subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care or Applied Science.

OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate - D

We consider the Technical Extended Certificate for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Extended Certificate with grade D plus two A-levels at grades BB. Either the Technical Extended Certificate or the A-level must be in a science or health-related subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care or Applied Science.

T Level

We will accept the Science and Healthcare Science pathways only and require an overall grade of Distinction.Contextual offers do not currently apply to applicants offering T-Level qualifications. Applicants meeting our contextual admissions criteria will not be made a reduced offer. T Level applicants who meet our contextual admissions criteria, and who have been predicted a Merit, may be made an aspirational offer at the standard entry requirements of the course e.g., an offer subject to them achieving an overall grade of Distinction.

We consider your full educational background. A decision about your suitability for this course will not be taken based solely on the foundation year completed, and will include all prior qualifications.

Applicants completing the INTO Manchester in partnership with The University of Manchester international foundation programme are required to achieve BBB in any subjects, with EAP B (6.5) and C (6.0) in each component.

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires that every student requiring a visa to study in the UK must show evidence of a minimum level of English Language (common European Framework (CEFR B2 level) to be granted a Student Route visa (previously known as a Tier 4 visa) to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. In addition, our academic Schools/Departments may require applicants to demonstrate English proficiency above the B2 level.
