The BA Digital Media, Culture and Music provides an innovative and interdisciplinary education that examines the intricate relationships between digital media, cultural practices, and music. This distinctive programme enables students to critically engage with contemporary musical expressions while acquiring essential skills in digital media production and music analysis.
In the Digital Media component, students explore how digital technologies influence communication, creativity, and cultural engagement in the realm of music. The curriculum covers a diverse range of topics, including social media dynamics, digital storytelling, content creation, and the impact of digital platforms on cultural representation and identity. Students are trained to critically analyse digital media texts and practices, investigating how technology shapes the production and dissemination of musical content. Practical training in digital media production equips students with the skills needed to create engaging digital work, enhancing their understanding of the contemporary media landscape and its influence on music and culture.
The Music component provides students with a comprehensive understanding of musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory. The curriculum covers essential aspects of musical styles, genres, and practices from around the world, enabling students to explore the cultural significance of music in various societies. Students engage with key themes such as identity, tradition, and modernity in music, examining a wide array of musical forms including traditional, popular, and experimental genres. This component encourages students to reflect on the cultural contexts that shape musical production and reception, fostering a nuanced appreciation of the rich musical heritage and contemporary issues facing diverse musical communities.
By combining these two disciplines, the BA Digital Media, Culture and Music programme equips graduates with a unique blend of critical analytical skills, musical knowledge, and digital literacy. This interdisciplinary approach prepares students for diverse career opportunities in media, cultural production, music education, arts management, and research, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to discussions about the role of digital media in shaping musical narratives and identities.
