Overview

Are you fascinated by the events that shaped the modern world? Are you keen to build a set of skills crucial for future employment or study? If so, our MA in Modern History is for you. As a Master’s student, you’ll deepen your understanding of the people, cultures, nations and ideas that have influenced over two hundred years of history.

You’ll be taught by a team of internationally recognised experts in political, international, imperial, social and cultural history. You’ll learn about developments around the globe: from Britain and its empire, across continental Europe and the Middle East, to South and East Asia and North America.

Your Modern History Master’s programme will combine seminars with smaller tutorials and guided independent study. At the heart of your MA experience will be your dissertation, where you’ll explore a topic of your choice and produce a piece of original research.

Joining us, you’ll become part of a vibrant community. Norwich is rich in resources for the study of modern history, including archives at UEA, Norfolk Record Office and the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures.

Our MA programme will also equip you with essential skills: problem-solving, self-discipline, independent working, critical judgement, and excellent oral and written skills. Our graduates have gone on to careers as varied as law, finance, the Civil Service, local government, heritage, tourism and teaching – with many more besides. And if you’re thinking of taking your study of history even further, our MA will provide a vital foundation.

Hi, I'm Alexandra and I'm a 2nd year Drama and Creative Writing undergraduate student at UEA. I'm Spanish/Bolivian but have lived most of my life in Bolivia. As someone with a passion for stage and screen, I chose the Drama and Creative Writing course at UEA to develop and acquire more skills that would allow me to succeed in my career path. I am particularly passionate about scriptwriting, acting and filmmaking, so in the future, I hope I can dedicate myself to all of them. I was previously studying graphic design in Bolivia, but I decided to apply to UEA to pursue my goals; however, I still dedicate some time to it because I love it. I also enjoy photography (especially nature photography), drawing and painting, writing and dancing.

Hi! I'm really interested in the history of American music and how it has shaped, and been shaped by, American culture over time. I also love twentieth century and modern American literature. I started at UEA when I was 22 and I'm so happy I made the decision to come to UEA as a mature student, I'm loving my course and spent a semester studying at a college in Vermont this year! In the future I don't know exactly what I want to do but I would like to work in a museum or with conservation. I am currently completing my study abroad in Ghent, Belgium and it has been one of the best opportunities of my life, I have been able to meet people from all across the world and study new and interesting classes. My future plans involve working in a lab to progress research in genetic diseases that affect the immune system. This comes from a place of personal interest because I had a chronic genetic disease but am now cured and wish to help on this front by getting into research.

I enjoy developing myself as a student, learning new skills and interacting with people. A favorite pastime of mine is reading, especially thrillers but I'm open to other genres as well. I'm originally from India, specifically from Lucknow, the city of Nawabs (and Tunday kababs), and relish trying new foods and connecting with people from different cultures through their traditions :) Having grown up in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that is the place I call home. The links I have to all these different places has given me a broader worldview, and allowed me to experience life from a different lens.

Hi! I'm Dhara, I’m in my third year at UEA and I study English Literature and Creative Writing, having transferred degrees from Psychology.
