The study of Greek will give you access to one of the world’s great literatures. You will read foundational texts of the western tradition in their original language, including:
epics
tragedy
philosophy
history
This will complement your studies in linguistics, giving you the opportunity to investigate linguistic structures in both a dead and a living language.
This programme shares a common structure with MA Classics and English Language, but from Year 2 onwards, there is a focus on linguistics courses.
Your final dissertation is taken in either classics or linguistics.

We have one of the largest groups of classics-focused academics in the UK, with around 30 members of staff covering a variety of research interests.
Linguistics has a long history at the University of Edinburgh, and our teaching staff have an excellent reputation for research in this area.
Linguistics is a new subject for nearly all undergraduates, so you will not need any prior knowledge at the beginning of the programme.
