French Studies (75% of your degree) develops high-level language proficiency alongside a strong understanding of the cultures and societies of the French-speaking world. You will study French from either beginner or advanced entry level, working towards becoming proficient, while also taking cultural modules each semester alongside modules from your minor subject. These cultural modules explore a variety of areas, including literature, cinema, sociolinguistics, as well as the histories and societies of French-speaking regions. During your Year Abroad, you will spend time in France studying at a university, working as a language assistant in a school, or completing a professional placement in a French-speaking country. If French is combined with another language, the year abroad is divided between two different countries.
A Minor in Portuguese enables students to attain proficiency by graduation, through structured and immersive language training. Students develop advanced skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening in one of the world’s most important languages, spoken in Portugal, Brazil and across Africa, and sustained by dynamic heritage and diasporic communities in North America and Asia. Proficiency in Portuguese opens access to dynamic global regions and to diverse artistic traditions throughout the Portuguese-speaking world. An optional Year Abroad in Portugal or Brazil further strengthens fluency and intercultural competence, while enhancing students' career prospects worldwide.
Most Combined Degrees allow you to adapt the weighting of each by 25% after the first year, helping you to keep your options open. Please note, however, students studying either a Business or Economics pathway in combination with another subject cannot increase from 25% to 50% or from 50% to 75% and it is not possible to transfer from a 50% to 75% Law.
