Course summary
Ancient history involves the study of the history and culture of Greece, Rome and the wider Mediterranean between the 8th century BC and the 5th century AD with the opportunity to learn Latin and ancient Greek if you wish. French involves the study of a key European and international language as well as the cultures it has influenced across the world.
Why study this course at the University of Glasgow?
You will have the opportunity to visit archaeological sites and museums in Italy and Greece as part of your studies. If you progress to Honours you will have the opportunity to spend up to three weeks (usually during the summer vacation after year 3) visiting archaeological sites and museums in Italy, Greece or another part of the ancient world.
You may also spend year 3 studying at universities in Europe (for example, in Athens or Rome), Australia, New Zealand or North America. As part of your French degree you can choose to focus on a whole range of topics including French comics, French song, travel writing, medieval France and contemporary French history.
Career Prospects?
As an Ancient History graduate you will be able to enter many different careers, from the heritage/cultural sector and teaching to consultancy and financial services. Ancient History/Classics graduates also follow careers in fields such as publishing, law or accountancy; many decide to stay in academia and pursue postgraduate degrees.

Graduates have gone on to pursue rewarding careers in the media, teaching (both at home and abroad), journalism, tourism, translating and interpreting, and the Civil Service, as well as business, commerce and marketing.

Well, let’s just say I’m aiming for somewhere between a lab genius discovering the next big breakthrough and a science communicator who makes pharmacology sound cooler than it is (and trust me, it’s pretty cool). I am passionate about science and how it can change lives in such meaningful ways and my end goal is to make medicine a bit more accessible than it is today.
