Course summary

Language is a fundamental part of what makes us human, but how often do we stop and think about it? It’s a crucial tool for us to be able to comprehend and communicate our understanding of the world around us, demanding discipline, observation and imagination. Sound interesting? If so, our BA (Hons) English Language degree is the right option for you.

Designed to delve into the varieties and histories of the English language, this course will give you the training you need to understand how the written and spoken word is structured and acquired. Analysing the English language from a range of perspectives, you’ll also explore how linguistics vary across regions, and how language helps us to form our identities and influence social change.

English Language at The University of Salford is part of the interdisciplinary Northern School of Writing at Salford, where students and staff work alongside colleagues in Literature and Creative Writing to expand the possibilities of our subject and enrich lives with literature.

You will:

Year 1
During your first year, you will complete four modules:

  • Critical Skills in the 21st Century
  • Introducing Language
  • Introduction to Stylistics
  • Language, Mind and Society

Year 2
During your second year, you will complete four core modules:

  • History and Diversity in English
  • Structure of English
  • Sounds of English
  • Truth and Meaning
    You will also choose two optional modules which may include those listed below:
  • Language and Big Data
  • Language Acquisition
  • Analysing Media Texts
  • Political Communication: Media and Democracy
  • University Wide Language Programme
  • Introduction to Children’s Literature
  • The Romantic Period: the Sublime and the Gothic
  • Work Placement Module

Year 3
During your third year, you will complete one core module:

  • Language Project (core module)
    You will also choose four optional modules which may include those listed below:
  • Teaching Masterclass
  • Northern Voices
  • Biography: Tradition and Innovation
  • Language and Communication
  • Health Communication

Assessment method

An important part of your academic journey is being able to demonstrate where you are in your learning. As part of our English language university courses, you’ll be assessed through a combination of coursework exercises, essays and reports, group presentations and portfolios of work. You will undertake one core exam, and three other optional modules also include an exam as assessment method.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) is required. Maths at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) is preferred but not essential. You must fulfil our GCSE entry requirements in addition to the Level 3 qualification requirements

T Level - M

English language requirements

International applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0, with no element below 5.5, is proof of this.
