Course summary

Architecture shapes the spaces where life unfolds: our homes, schools, theatres, hospitals and the environments that connect us. At Nottingham, you’ll learn to design with creativity and purpose. Our BArch Architecture course focuses on sustainability and equips you with the skills and knowledge to design spaces that improve lives and positively contribute to the environment. We take an integrated learning approach, combining technical, environmental sciences and humanities based subject work with design studio modules.

Year one studio modules provide a strong foundation with a focus on the fundamental core skills of design and presentation. In years two and three, you’ll have the freedom to choose from up to 12 design studio units, allowing you to explore areas that interest you the most. You’ll also join our vertical studios, working alongside students from different years in a collaborative environment that encourages peer mentoring and creative exchange.

Learning goes beyond the classroom, with a mixture of workshops, study trips and real-world projects involving clients and industry experts—giving you the experience that architectural practice and design-based industries seek.

Based on our University Park campus, you’ll have access to exceptional facilities, including dedicated studio spaces, advanced workshops and our Centre for 3D Design, supported by a skilled technical team. The quality of work produced by our students is illustrated by the many national and international awards they have won, including the AJ Student Prize 2021 (undergraduate category), the RIBA Bronze Medal (2017) and the RIBA Serjeant Award for Excellence in Drawing at Part 1 (2020).

Validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) (https://www.riba.org), this course is your first step toward becoming a professional architect. If you want to become an architect, the BArch is followed by the two-year MArch Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part II) and our Part III programme, which can be taken once sufficient professional experience has been gained.

IELTS (Academic)6.5(no less than 6.0 in any element) As well as IELTS (listed above), we also accept other English language qualifications. This includes TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB and O level English. Check our English language policies and equivalencies for further details. For presessional English or one-year foundation courses, you must take IELTS for UKVI to meet visa regulations. If you need support to meet the required level, you may be able to attend a Presessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course. Our Centre for English Language Education is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English in the UK. If you successfully complete your presessional course to the required level, you can then progress to your degree course. This means that you won't need to retake IELTS or equivalent.

Contextual admissions

Universities and colleges consider more than grades when assessing applications and may make offers based on a range of criteria. Learn more about contextual offers.

We consider applicants solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential – we use exam grades to prioritise applicants but look at a range of factors and aim to give everyone an equal opportunity to show their achievements.

We understand that background and personal circumstances can have an impact on academic performance at school or college. Applicants who are eligible under our contextual admissions policies may be considered for a reduced contextual offer.
