Are you passionate about helping those in need? Our Social Work degree aligns with Social Work England's professional standards and prepares you to work with some of our society's most marginalised and disadvantaged people.

Why study with us

• On completion of this degree, you’ll be eligible to apply to Social Work England for registration as a social worker.

• We have developed our Social Work course in partnership with key stakeholders. Including social work service users, carers, and representatives from social work agencies. So you’ll be well prepared for the fast-changing and challenging world of social work. Most of our teaching staff still practice too so the skills you learn are relevant to today's environment.

• Gain international experience. Students have visited Amsterdam, Cyprus, Toronto and Krakow to learn about social work organisations.

• You will benefit from 170 days of practice placements and 30 skills delivery days.

• Our diverse intake adds a valuable mix of ages, perspectives and previous experience to your learning.

• A member of our academic staff will visit you on your placement to support you.

Foundation Year

Your foundation year is designed to support your progression onto the BA (Hons) Social Work degree. It will help you develop the academic skills and confidence you need to succeed at university, while introducing key areas of social care and social work practice.

You'll study a range of engaging topics as you develop your academic writing and study skills. Through hands-on learning and reflective practice, you’ll explore how to work effectively with individuals, families and groups in a range of settings. You’ll also be introduced to community-focused approaches that recognise and build on the strengths and assets present within communities.

By the end of the year, you’ll be ready to take the next step in your social work journey towards making a real difference in people’s lives.

After passing your foundation year, you will be able to enrol onto our BA (Hons) Social Work degree if you have met the entry requirements. This will enable you to apply for professional registration with Social Work England upon graduation.

You can progress onto the first year of our BA (Hons) Social Work if you meet the entry requirements. This includes passing the Foundation Year with an overall average of 50% or more per module, a successful interview, and satisfactory DBS and Fitness to Practice checks.

If you don't meet this criteria, you may be able to transfer onto an alternative degree programme. This includes:

BA (Hons) Applied Community and Social Care Studies
BA (Hons) International Social Work and Community Development (This does not qualify you to register as a social worker in the UK)
BA (Hons) Children Schools and Family (Graduate Practitioner)
BA (Hons) Youth and Community Practice

Accreditations

• This course was approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and is now approved by Social Work England, the specialist body who regulates social workers in their vital roles.​

Future careers

After graduating you could become a social worker in a range of areas, such as: children and families, youth justice, older adults, mental health, community care, children and adults with disabilities, education welfare and substance misuse.
