Sport, Health and Coaching Science

Are you wanting to progress a career in Sport, Health and/or Coaching? Here at UCNL we provide the opportunity to study a BSc Honours Degree (3 years full time) in Sport, Health and Coaching Science. Whether it is to progress your current career or to change career, we are able to provide you an opportunity to expand your knowledge, skills and competencies within many discipline areas including sports coaching, sports psychology and strength and conditioning.

The Sport, Health and Coaching Science programme offered at University Campus North Lincolnshire strives to establish its unique regional and national identity by leveraging the strengths and resources available at the campus. The curriculum will incorporate regional case studies, shedding light on the specific challenges and opportunities faced by professionals in the sports, health, and coaching industry within the local context. Collaborations with regional sports organisations (e.g., Scunthorpe United, healthcare providers, and community groups) will provide students with real-world learning experiences and access to industry networks. By tailoring the programme to address regional needs, it aims to attract students from diverse backgrounds and equip them with the skills, knowledge and competencies necessary to tackle both regional and national challenges.

This course is particularly relevant to people already working in, or looking to develop a career within the Sport, Health and Coaching sectors, including sports coaches/practitioners who would like to strengthen their portfolio with an academic background.

This course provides a range of skills and competencies relevant across a variety of different professions. People who have completed this course have gone on to work in areas including teaching PE (primary, secondary and SEND school), practitioner work (such as strength and conditioning coaches, sports psychologists and performance analysts), as well as returning to higher education to lecture. Some of these opportunities have been developed from work experience provided on the course such as working with the Scunthorpe United FC team, working within schools/colleges and sports coaching companies.

If you wish to continue studying beyond this course, it will provide you with a strong academic basis to do so. Course progression routes could include studying at masters’ level and also teaching qualifications such as PGCE for those wanting to teach their specialist subject.

Occasional changes to modules and course content may take place. Students will be notified when applicable.

The primary way of delivering this course is on campus.

On campus teaching includes a combination of lectures, small group seminars, workshops, guest lectures and one to one discussions with your tutor. On this course we also deliver industry relevant methods which include consultation practical based sessions that can be used within the Sport, Health and Coaching sectors. Students will be assessed in a number of ways throughout the degree programme, including written assignments, presentations, exams, practical deliveries and case studies/practical consultations.

Contact time for students is over 2 days per week for the full-time route. This allows students to obtain work experience in the sector throughout the other days as well as conduct independent learning and assessment work. This also allows students to manage work and family commitments they may have during the course.

Students will receive approximately 8 hours of teaching time per week throughout the full-time course, depending on the modules being taken. Additional one-to-one meetings with tutors will provide further support. Students have the option to contact an additional support team to develop key study skills such as referencing and academic writing style. We have found this to be a very useful aspect of the course, especially for anyone who has had a break in education and is returning to studies, however the service is available for all students who attend the course.
