Course summary
Our two-year MRes programme offers advanced technical training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and mathematical research methods in economics.
You will build the knowledge and skills needed to undertake a PhD or research career, or for working as an economist outside of academia.
This programme is suitable for those who have completed an MSc in Economics or for very strong students with a first degree in economics or another mathematical subject.

It combines innovative, policy-focused research and a firm commitment to public and policy engagement with high-level advances in economic theory, structural modelling and econometrics.
We have a long tradition of excellence. Groundbreaking economists Alfred Marshall and Mary Paley were among our earliest academics in the late 19th century, with Marshall the first Professor of Economics and Paley one of the first female lecturers in the UK. In the late 20th century, future Nobel Prize winner Angus Deaton was the first Professor of Econometrics.
Today, you will be joining an academic community that is international, forward-thinking, collaborative, and committed to helping all our students reach their full potential. We are home to the Economics Network, which improves the teaching and learning of economics in universities throughout the UK and Europe. We are also home to the Economics Observatory, which helps the public understand the most pressing economic issues we face today.

International applicants
The University of Bristol welcomes applications from international students and accepts a wide range of qualifications for postgraduate study. Entry requirements
You will typically need a strong MSc degree (65% or above) or international equivalent in Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science or other very quantitative-based subjects. Evidence of strong performance (minimum merit/2.1 or international equivalent) in Economics and/or Mathematics modules will also be required. For this programme, recent study (within the last 5 years) is usually required, though if your most recent study was slightly over 5 years ago, your application will still be considered by the academic tutor.
Students with a strong upper second-class honours undergraduate degree (65% or higher) or international equivalent in Finance may also be considered.
If you are currently completing a degree, we understand that your final grade may be higher than the interim grades or module/unit grades you have achieved during your studies to date.
We will consider your application if your interim grades are currently slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements and may make you an aspirational offer. This offer would be at the standard level, so you would need to achieve the standard entry requirements by the end of your degree. Specific module requirements would still apply.
We will also consider your application if your final overall achieved grade is slightly lower than the programme's entry requirement.
If your achieved grade is lower than our entry requirements, your application may be more likely to receive an offer if you have additional relevant work experience or qualifications. If you have at least one of the following, please include your CV (curriculum vitae/résumé) when you apply, showing:
- Evidence of significant relevant work experience in an academic or STEM environment.
- A postgraduate qualification.

Additional fee information
