Course summary

The BA (Hons) Degree in Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusive Practice (SENDIP) (Top-Up) is designed for students wishing to develop further their knowledge and understanding of SEND and will prepare students for a multi–disciplinary and multi- contextual professional environment.
Whilst this course does not provide professional training, it provides an excellent basis for professional development in education, health or social care or related areas with children and young people. One of the key strengths of the program is that it develops practice in every module to encourage students to apply their learning.

Modules

The following modules are valued at 20 credits:

• Creating Inclusive Learning Environments and Resources
• Leadership and Management
• Ethics, Safeguarding, and Advocacy in Policy & Practice
• Working and Supporting Children & Young People with SEND and Their Families in a Variety of Settings

In addition, you will undertake the following module which is valued at 40 credits:

• Dissertation Research & Study Skills

Assessment method

There are no examinations on this programme of study. Each module is assessed individually and throughout the course you will be assessed through the following methods:

• Essays
• Seminar papers
• Group presentations
• Individual presentations
• Reflective accounts
• Research project
• Literature critiques
• Work-based projects
• Reflective practice portfolio
• Out-of-class activities (online, viva voce)

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

HND (BTEC) - M

A minimum of 240 credits at Merit profile or above and must be in Early Years or Special Educational Needs related disciplines.

A Foundation Degree awarded upon successfully gaining 240 credits and a 55% grade average in Year 2 in either Early Years or Special Educational Needs related disciplines.

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) will be required for this course.
Other
RPL/RPEL In accordance with module learning outcomes, students’ prior learning will be accredited where relevant knowledge and understanding is displayed with certification. This must align to level 4 and 5 standards and will be ratified by the Course Leader. Previous work experience will also be considered against module learning outcomes and where certification is not available, work experience can be used to enhance content and quality of student work.

English language requirements

Students who are non-native English speakers, or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualification, will be considered as eligible to apply for the programme/course.

You may need to cover travel costs to work placements.
